Bull and bear markets

A bull market is a long stretch of rising prices. A bear market is a long fall, often defined as 20% or more from the top.

In plain English

Bulls attack by thrusting their horns upward, bears by swiping down. That's the usual story behind the names, and it is about as scientific as most market commentary.

Uncle Gary explains

Bull market: everyone at the barbecue is a genius investor. Bear market: nobody at the barbecue has ever owned a stock, and could we please talk about the weather.
